Tactics is the hallowed Dungeons and Dragons franchise translated into tactical form: YOu are thrust into a series of some 40 missions ranging from standard dungeon-delivng to more advanced and epic set-piece battles against hordes of enemies or superbosses.
The overarching story plot is simple fare: STop an evil prophesy seeking to destroy the world. But it is how the game plays out that’s interesting. Alignment choices are frequent, and how the story advances is influenced by your own decisions.
Being a law abiding character will see your interaction choices change to become a pillar of justice. Being chaotic evil scum, will render your goals as personal journeys to line the purse.
Tactics does an excellent job of keeping the more complex nunances of the rules in Dungeons and Dragons out of the player’s sight. Some might say too much,as many instrinsic factors - such as dice rolling - are not displayed. Instead, a display such as red circle around a character means that he is nearly impossible to hit.
Different strategies and tactics are regularly introduced to newer players, such as tumbling as a mechanic for moving about. For those looking in-depth, there is an excellent glossary with frewuent usd terms and conditions that can be handily accessed via Tactic’s spiral menu. Players worried about long-term replayability, don’t fret.
Developers have already promised that additional content such as new missions, skills and classes will eventually be made available.
With a wealth of Wi-Fi options including an adventurer death match and cooperative mission mode, there is enough here to justify the price.
Making up for the dismal Lord of the Rings Tactis game, this is, bar none, one of the best and most faithful recreations of Dungeons & Dragons available for any handheld once you get past its learning curve.

Luminous Arc Reviewed - Enjoyable and Splendid

Luminous Arc is a turn-based, tactical role-playing game in which a group of orphaned youths, known as the Garden Children, embark on a quest to rid the world of eveil witches. As they progress, the children mature and believe that evil is relative.
The story takes you in a linear fashion from one location on the map to the next, predictably with you fighting battles at each stop.
Thankfully, there are plenty of elements that add variety to the battles, breaking the monotony of an otherwise repetitive gameplay.
For instance, instead of simply defeating enemies by wearing down their hit points, you might need to surround them with your party members.
Luminous Arc also offers each character special skills, magic spells, special attacks that are strangely named as “Flash Drives”, and even cooperative attacks. The tactics in battle involves the placement of your characters on the grid relative to the enemies’ positions - kind of like chess.
Characters attacking from a relatively higher position deal more damage, as is the case when you attack an enemy from behind or from the sides. So, the challenge is how to best place your characters for maximum attack and minimum damage.
Participation in battles allows your characters to gain experience points and level up, attaining new spells and skills. Equipment and items can be purchased from merchants or picked up post battle to enhance their battle prowess.
Luminous Arc has a bunch of eclectic features that give it a distinctive “kawaii” - Japanese for cute - anime feel. Cutesy visuals aside, the score is touching yet cheery, and the dialogue full of sassy humour. Too bad the humour is let down by poor dubbing.
Although not a game that possesses you wholly, Luminous Arc is a welcome distraction for long commutes or boring lectures.
